More Taliban Leaders Arrested

According to a senior NATO officer,  American forces have detained or killed “three or four” Taliban provincial governors.

These arrests include the Taliban’s shadow governors for two provinces.

Afghanistan — Two senior Taliban leaders have been arrested in recent days inside Pakistan, officials said Thursday, as American and Pakistani intelligence agents continued to press their offensive against the group’s leadership after the capture of the insurgency’s military commander last month.

Together, the three arrests mark the most significant blow to the Taliban’s leadership since the American-backed war began eight years ago. They also demonstrate the extent to which the Taliban’s senior leaders have been able to use Pakistan as a sanctuary to plan and mount attacks in Afghanistan.

Indeed, the capture of two Taliban governors inside Pakistan may reflect the greater level of insecurity that all Taliban leaders are feeling inside Afghanistan at the moment.

“The Taliban are feeling a new level of pain,” the senior NATO officer said.

Well, that was a breath of fresh air! I agree with both of you. Stopping the opium trade probably would eliminate government corruption in Afghanistan. But isn’t opium the basis of the Afghan economy? It seems to me that all the fighting there is about who will control the opium trade and the enormous profits from such a valuable and renewable commodity. It’s like an inexhaustible gold mine!
Maybe I’m cynical but I don’t believe our government or the Afghan government has any intention of eliminating Afghani poppy fields. I’m sure it could be done in a matter of weeks or months if they wanted to.

@ Anomaly: You agree with me? This is an historic moment. Incredible as this may sound, I also agree with you that it is a good thing to see the main Taliban leaders arrested.

We are never going to “win” or resolve anything in Afghanistan until we do something about the drug problem. Most of the heroin worldwide comes from the poppy fields of Afghanistan and there is so much money being made in drug trafficking that the government is easily corrupted. The Taliban turns a blind eye because they are using the drug profits to fund their insurgency. I don’t know why the US government does not focus on the drug trade. If you eradicate the poppy fields, you eliminate the source of funds for the Al Queda and the Taliban.

@Rebel: We finally agree on something. Still, I am happy to see several of the main Taliban leaders arrested.
