The Glenn Beck Rally In A Nut Shell

Glenn Beck’s rally was as expected, but before the attendance numbers get out of hand, the US Park Service estimates up to 350,000 Tea People and flag wavers attended.  That had to be said up front before the exaggerated numbers come out later.

This photo is proof there weren’t just a few kooks in attendance.

From Liberaland:

James Frye:

The people who attended were clearly there for a red-meat tossing tirade about how the evil Socialist President Obama and the handmaidens of Satan – aka The Democratic Party – were destroying America.  What they got instead was a long-form Christian revival meeting combined with a military recruiting show.  The message was pretty clear and nothing new – “If America doesn’t turn toward God we’re all doomed!” combined with speaker after speaker pretty much fetishizing the military.

The faces in the (nearly all-white) crowd told the story – they came from all over the country for THIS? I’ve never seen so many frowns concentrated in one spot in my life.   The only people of color were on the stage and it was a parade of sermons and tales of military bravery, one after the other.

None of them ever did get around to defining what they meant by “honor” either (neither Beck nor Saint Sarah of the Perpetual Victim),  just that we didn’t have it like the Founding Fathers did.  Martin Luther King’s name was invoked a few times to scattered applause.

People on Twitter were reporting that the attendees said they felt “snookered” by Beck and weren’t happy at all.So what’s the “miracle” that took place today?  It was that this public ego masturbation by Glenn Beck attracted so many people (up to 350,000 people according to the US Park Service estimates) and got any attention at all.

Of course the Hitler meme was used again:

When was the last time American Christians attended a rally to hear a Mormon preach?

Where else would you see a Confederate flag without watching an old movie?

In a nutshell, the Hitler meme is still being used, Xenophobia was in the air, Confederate flags are all the rage and the people that attended felt ripped of. The rally was just as expected.  These people can’t run a rally and they most certainly can’t lead America.  This man is a nut. Get out and vote.

    Shiva, that’s why you are so lost, out of all of those you picked the black panthers as the issue…HAhahahah.. So I guess everything else is okay with you?

    That’s why we advance in November. We will advance our nation despite your effort to turn it into France.

    • Shiva

      @Robert, Robert, I thought so little of your post that all I could get out of it was black panthers. You seem to believe in Beck so much that I will leave you to your misery

      You know, France is light years ahead of us in Education, healthcare and several other minor details. You seem to buy into some other silliness about them. Thats fine with me.

  • Tim1965

    The National Park Service has not provided crowd estimates since 1995. It issued a permit for 300,000, but that was a permit — issued months ago — and not a crowd count.

  • Andrea Griffin

    Yup, there’s always going to be a few dicks in every crowd. Is that surprising? Now, if a majority of the people there were wearing Go Back to Kenya shirts that would be one thing, but in a group that large it’s pretty disingenuous to select those few to represent the whole.

  • mgssc

    The National Park Service no longer offers estimate since they were burned so badly by the Million Man March. Furthermore, go look up aerial photos of the I Have a Dream speech (250,000) and Beck’s rally. NOT. EVEN. CLOSE.

    Your are making stuff up.

    • http://FreakOutNation.com Anomaly100

      @mgssc, Different era. That hardly applies. Why are you trying to make Beck a better man than MLK? He’s not.

      • Andrea Griffin

        @Anomaly100, Where did you come up with that? All mgssc was doing was commenting on the attendance. There was nothing in the comment to indicate the Glenn was somehow “better” than MLK. Go read it again.

      • Creature

        Yeah, Beck said that himself. It’s not about being better than MLK. It’s about being a better person, each and every person striving to be better and expecting that from others, especially politicians.

        • http://americanandproud.net Robert

          I love it.. “mostly white” yet you fail to mention the “mostly black” at Al’s rally…

          I also would like to know exactly what you are against?
          Becks rally was about HONOR, you seek to define it? You are so lost you don’t know what honor is? or are you just against it on principle?

          Becks Rally was about truth, so are you FOR lies?

          Becks rally was about individual responsibility, so are you for NO Responsibility?

          Becks rally was about a return to our faith in GOD, so are you against GOD?

          Becks rally was about charity, are you against charity?

          Becks rally was about the same thing MLK’s was about, the character of man not the color of man, so are you a racist?

          If you look at the crowd aligned against Becks rally you can truly see what kind of America they want. Code Pink, ANSWER, Socialist Workers, Black Panthers, NAACP, The race baiting Al and Jesse, and an assortment of liberal elites…Yeah I’ll take Becks crowd any day..

          November comes, then 2012… Get your crying towels ready proglodites your experiment has failed.

          • Shiva

            @Robert,

            Uh huh. Still worried about those 3 black panthers?

            Please do take becks crowd. And prepare yourself to go s ton of steps backwards in November is the republicans win.

            • Hank

              @Shiva, And this is the province almost exclusively of the radical liberal. When faced with persistent disagreement, your last refuge is nastiness. Ridicule. Insult.

              Surely you can arm yourself with something more intellectual. Robert made some very valid points and asked some pertinent questions. Is that the best you can do??

              This so well sums up people like you (at least, what you have displayed so far) and some foreign faux, degenerate “experts” on US Politics whose name and blog we are forbidden to mention because he likes to beat up on women!!

              http://bit.ly/9A8Qsn

              “The Last Refuge Of A Liberal”

              “The Democrats are going to get beaten badly in November. Not just because the economy is ailing. And not just because Obama over-read his mandate in governing too far left. But because a comeuppance is due the arrogant elites whose undisguised contempt for the great unwashed prevents them from conceding a modicum of serious thought to those who dare oppose them.”

              Hey!! Look at the bright side. Perhaps you can cry to the moderator about how mean I am and she will ban me. It seems to have worked on other blogs. But that’s how intellectual cowardice operates. If you can’t beat, ridicule or insult them into submission, then seek to silence them by any means possible.

              I have NO tolerance for scum like that.

              • Shiva

                @Hank,

                Yawn

                So, can you answer the question, are you still worried about those 3 black panthers?

                Is there some problem with my statement prepare to take a backward step in November if the republicans win? I mean look at your post, it says basoically the same thin g in reverse :)

                You are a funny one, so full of the talking points.

              • Shiva

                @Hank, BTW, as long as youu are being a commedian, “whose undisguised contempt for the great unwashed ” applies to the people who wish to kill off the old ones by stopping SS and medicare etc. Also the ones that want to shut off unemployment for millions of people.

                Sorry, your talking point applies to the republican tea party.

            • Creature

              @ Shiva What Black Panthers? I must have missed them. I wanted to shake hands with them. You know you don’t have to tell us you yawned. Yeah, about that step backward, I’d like it to be a BIG step backward. Maybe September 22, 1862.

              • Shiva

                @Creature, You might refer to the person I responded to about the black panthers, seems he was worried about the 3 black panthers that supposedly were bothering people at a voting establishment.

                The step backwards will not be anything that you are going to like. Have they explained it to you yet? You dont get bonus points for supporting them you know.

                Are you trying to say that you want to take back the Emancipation Proclamation? Do away with it?

          • MVM

            @Robert,

            I am unaware of any “radical liberals” in any positions of power in the United States at this time. You can screech all you want about “arrogant elites” who hate America or whatever but can you name names? The President has no hatred for America, nor does the Speaker or any of the Democratic majorities in congress.

            What radical liberal proposals have been passed by this Congress? Mit Romney care? Or the stimulus which was loaded with tax cuts? The Federal tax rates are at their lowest point in 40 years.

            Your posts are full of rhetoric and void of any facts. It’s just hate disguised as Jesus wrapped in the flag. It’s nothing new what Beck and you are doing. And any success you have in November will be short lived, the pragmatism of the American people will show through once again and throw you on the pile of discarded televangelists, libertarian fools and corporatist sociopaths.

            • Creature

              @MVM Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Charles Rangel, Chuck Schumer, Cass Sunstein, Valerie Jarrett, just for starters.
              I know I left some out though. Mmmmmmmm Tax CUTS? I guess that’s why everyone is hiring. No, wait that’s not happening. Hey guess you made a mistake with that one. The american people will speak in November and the unemployment rate is going to go up for people in DC. Libs is smart ain’t they. Too bad you always run out of other people’s money.

              • Shiva

                @Creature, The fact is people are paying less taxes right now than during Reagans time, yet you support a redical conservative who wants to extend tax cuts for the very rich and add almost 3 trillion to the deficit. Yeah cons are smart arnt they?

                Everyones a radical that you dont agree with. Do you see them under your bed?

                People are not hiring because of taxes. They are not hiring because of the banks. Nice try. You know, the banks that just took billions out of peoples retirement savings and now that radical moron boehner wants to stop any regulation of so they can do it again?

          @Creature,If Beck was a better person, he could & should have chosen another time & place. He took the spotlight off of a great man. Glenn Beck has no honor except in the eyes of Goldline.

        • Creature

          @ Anomaly100 Like I said above Beck said himself he was NOT a better man than MLK but you didn’t listen to me or Beck, so whatever. Everyone there knew the Honor of MLK was being observed including MLK’s Niece. Goldline is a sponsor of Glenn’s show. It’s how radio is done.

          • http://FreakOutNation.com Anomaly100

            @Creature, If you’re going to try to correct me, do it right. Goldline is the only sponsor of Glenn Beck’s aside from Freedom Works but they feed off each other so that discounts them.

  • M Fitzpatrick

    I thought the US Park Service QUIT giving out crowd estimates years ago….

    • http://FreakOutNation.com Anomaly100

      @M Fitzpatrick, Another estimate is 85,000 attendees. My sources are linked. Check with them, however this is the highest of all the estimates I could find.

      • Andrea Griffin

        @Anomaly100, Apparently NBC was reporting 300,000. Strange that CBS was reporting less than a third of that. I’m not convinced that the crowd broke a half million, but when you’re the one standing up at the podium, excited and energized, it’s pretty easy to overestimate these things.

        CBS: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20014993-503544.html

        NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/29/us/politics/29beck.html?_r=1

        MSNBC notes the permit for 300k, but doesn’t give an actual count that I could find: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38895645

        Interesting.

        • http://FreakOutNation.com Anomaly100

          @Andrea Griffin, Thank you for the estimates. This was rather funny in the NYT article:,

          Becky Benson, 56, traveled from Orlando, Florida, because, she said, “we believe in Jesus Christ,” and Jesus, she said, would not have agreed with the economic stimulus package, bank bailouts and welfare.”

          How can any of us assume what Jesus would do today if He was an elected official?

  • go blue

    Thank you Glenn Beck and Fox News for standing for the truth! Google Glenn Beck attendence and the first 50+ websites state 78000. Does anyone need any more proof Google is in with the socailist Obama media? I am going to boycott Google and hope you do the same.

    • Shiva

      @go blue,

      What truth? Did you ever get the definition of what Beck was restoring?

      None of those people were there for a love fest or to watch a kook appoint himself pope. There was no point to anything that happened there today. It was nice to mention the troops byut eve wonder why the troops coming hoime ewas never mentioned? Its not part of the agenda that Palin has to double defense spending.

      If anyone goes to church what you heard today was what you should hear there.

      BTW, google doesnt do estimates, it goes off the websites that it spiders. It does no reporting on its own nor does it determine if site is liberal or conservative. So boycott away.

      • Creature

        Honor. It was called Restoring Honor, Couldn’t you see the Huge pillars that said Restoring Honor? Oh, Honor is something you don’t have. It’s making a commitment to live a better, more introspective life. Giving of yourself to help others, and expecting it of others.Are you sure you were there. It was all explained.

        • Shiva

          @Creature,

          I know what the thing was called. But how did he restore anything? He didnt. All he did was try and take the popes job after a year of race baiting and doing his best to be devisive. So please dont give us this restoring honor business.

          Thanks for the personal attack, as if you had a clue

        • CosmicSurfer

          @Creature, PREACHING about “restoring honor” is just polyperverse verbasl eroticism for his hangers on, wanna bes and fearful ckones (and clowns)…
          Hnor is something one has or doesn’t…honor is something that is inherent or isn’t…
          The headliners have NOTHING to do with honor.
          Honorable people don’t have to proclaim that they are honorable nor do they have to con, lie, manipulate, and propagandize.
          Honor was not shown yesterday by BECK. There was more honor shown by the statue of Lincoln, the algae in the pond; the chiggers in the grass; the leaves on the trees, than it was by any of the screamers into the microphones or the overly animated creatures on the steps.

          Yes I listened to bits of the bullshit – the over the top faked emotionalism of the Bi-Polar priest of pander and his cohorts – Queen Sarah, et al.

          There was no honor there, only hype

        • Creature

          @ Shiva I’ll get you a band-aid if your feelings we’re hurt.

      • Creature

        @ CosmicSurfer Why so angry? If you don’t like the message don’t listen. As far as honor goes, You’re right you either have it or you don’t. It Matters! Those in Washington Don’t and therefore we must “Fundementally Transform” Washington back to an Honorable Place.

    • Andrea Griffin

      @go blue, I think you fail to realize how Google’s searching algorithm works. The entries are not manually placed on the results page. It’s all mathematical based on keywords on the page itself, where links on that page go to, which pages link to that page, and some other factors as well. There’s no grand conspiracy here between Google and attendance reports.

      At most, it’s clever search engine optimization and gaming Google’s algorithm, which has happened in the past, but that is a little too much tin-foil hat for me.

  • Ilene

    I watched the rally today and I am sorry but people looked tired, bored and disappointed. I was expecting some kind of energy, quite frankly it looked like a town hall meeting by a group of low income and rather old people. Using math and the pictures available you can calculate the approximate number of attendees. when it was breaking up and entertainment started people where leaving. It was depressing watching them. The man is out for the money. it was sound, fury and as the Bard said Nothing. I am a registered Republican but not any more. Thanks to Glenn Beck.

    • Andrea Griffin

      @Ilene, If Glenn has driven you away from the Republican party, then he would be very glad to know about it. He rips into them as much as the Democrats, and if you actually listened to his show with any regularity at all you would know that.

    • Creature

      Good, I’m glad your a registered Republican, WHO CARES!
      Yes, Glenn was out for the money. $5.5 million and counting was raised and given to SOWF (Special Operations Warrior Foundation). What an evil plot. Get your nonsense straight.

      • Shiva

        @Creature, I would wait a few weeks and then find out where the money went.

        • Creature

          @ Shiva OH NO, Glenn lied about the money? I’m sure that story has already been written too. Just like the five I read about the event, before it happened. It’s like Minority Report with Libs. You can predict what is going to happen before it does. I think I’d use that talent for personal gain rather than “so-called” reporting. But truth doesn’t matter does it? If you repeat the lie
          enough times any idiot will believe it.

        • Shiva

          @Shiva, Yes, as I said, I would wait a few weeks and then find out where the money went. As for the rest of your post, it was entertaining.

  • Francine

    I was at the rally and didn’t see anyone unhappy. I also saw blacks, Hispanics, old and young there… All uniting in peace. Showing American pride. Excluding no one, embracing faith, hope & charity. Please let’s stop the hatred and the slander. A good thing, no.. A great thing happened today. Americans from across the nation gathered to remember a most special man who “had a dream” that a man be measured by the content of his character, not the color of his skin. It was beautiful then as well as now. We (all Americans) should promote unity and positive energy on this historic day. Please don’t distort the rally’s message bc you don’t like Beck or Palin. It wasn’t about one person, or a group of people…it was about “We, the people…”. Thank you for reading.

    • Hank

      I would have hoped you would come up with something a little more honest.

      Can you honestly say you saw or heard nothing of redeeming value? Nothing good? Nothing positive? Do the pictures you posted above honestly sum it all up for you?? If so, I genuinely feel sorry for you.

      But I must thank you for turning me on to “Tweet Deck”. I still haven’t figure out exactly how to use it. But it was incredibly entertaining watching all the Liberal Heads explode!!

      You know, now that I think about it, if I could make a compendium of all the stupid comments I saw criticizing Beck and his efforts, it would make your few examples above look like nothing in comparison.

      • Dave Kennedy

        You attendees do realize that Glenn Beck referred to MLK as a ‘Radical Socialist’ -

        The entire event was a political farce.

        • Stevoni

          I had written a lot here, and decided it would fall on deaf ears.

          So, I will leave this page with this thought:

          According to the visitor counter at the top of the page, it reads, 426,023. If you divide that by the number of subscribers to the is site, 10 (at the bottom of the page), you come up with the following:

          426,023 / 10 = FAIL !!!

          And I would love to the metadata from those old stock photos above…. smells like a basement blogger. 10 subscribers? Are you freakin kidding me?

          • http://FreakOutNation.com Anomaly100

            @Stevoni, That’s a good deflection but you didn’t mention the post. The number of visitors here does add to this post? This site is 8 months old. Your excuse is….?

            • Stevoni

              @Anomaly100,

              Deflection? From a marketing, market share, retention standpoint nothing you say really matters because you can’t retain even 1% of the people that come to this site – let alone read this particular post. I believe that is in part due to YOUR OWN GROSS DEFLECTIONS about reality…. which leads me to “the post” your so anxious for me to comment on.

              I could care less about the mood of the mass, or the nuts with rebel flags who attended. But when I ran across your post today and compared it to other story’s I read (Not on Fox News) you absolutely portrayed a sick distortion that only Pelosi could be proud of. I am a pretty objective minded person, but hell, the Huffington Post and ABC did not spin this event nearly as much as your deranged account of what actually went down.

              I have some friends that are into the whole Tea Party craze, and I can respect their view. I know for a fact that THEY are not racists, homophobes, or any other label they have been given by people like you. I know them to be genuine, honest, and some of the kindest people I have ever known – and I say that with all the sincerity a human can possibly display about another human.

              So yeah, it pains me a little to see some basement bloggers rendition of the Clampets-meet-the KKK and think that you are labeling people I know. You just assume way too much about a lot of good people – and that all 8/28 attendees are all the same, when the REAL FACT IS they are NOT. In fact, I would wager to say that the vast majority of those who attended today are not what you make them out to be.

              That makes your view point not only irresponsible, but also shows how exclusive, arrogant, and (stupid/ignorant – can’t make up my mind) you and all of your basement blogging buddies really are. You say awful things about some really fine citizens with a different viewpoint – and for that, you my friend live in a very distorted world.

              Now, keep in mind, I voted for Obama – straight ticket! And I will be sick to no end if Palin gets the GOP Nomination because she might actually have a chance to win given the politcal climate as viewed by a TRUE OBJECTIVE measure, unlike yours. Regardless.. God Forbid She Win.

              But make not mistake, my original post was not silly or misguided. I used your OWN numbers and some common sense to tell me that nobody gives a damn about what you have to say, save your 10 family member/subscribers. Just think, in 10 years, you just might have 100 subscribers at your current rate of growth.

              Please, enjoy your arrogance fest – even at my expense. Like the rest of the objective world, except for Liberals, Democrats, Republicans, and the in between nut jobs, I don’t give a damn about what you have to say either – that is, beyond the the 30 seconds I gave you today.

              Enjoy your waste of time. I’m sure you are going to ‘really let me have it now’….

              • Shiva

                @Stevoni,

                You still dont have a point. Nobody uses RSS anymore.

          • Shiva

            @Stevoni,

            And?

            I hope the rest of what you had written wasnt as silly as the only point you left us with was.

          • Hank

            @Stevoni, Although I disagree with her ideologically, she is actively trying to make a difference.

            And as far as the number of subscribers…the only time you start at the top is when you’re digging a hole.

            I have hope for her. Though not much!! ;-) ;-)

            • Stevoni

              There were 140,000+ watching the live feed on Facebook. No link, I saw that with my own eyes.

              And I thought the area around the Reflecting Pool held 200K respectively? If so, there were over 300K from the over fill around the Monument and the field to the right (facing the monument) of the Reflecting Pool.

              Who cares about the actual number anyway? It was lot more than was at Sharpton’s event by any stretch – and Sharpton lead all of his folks over to Beck’s event? Man, you got to hand it Sharpton – he is all about uniting some folks.

              • http://FreakOutNation.com Anomaly100

                @Stevoni, People watching via Facebook do not count. I mentioned at the beginning of this post that the numbers would be exaggerated. Minutes later, you came in and thought my blog’s visitors were exaggerated because there are 10 subscribers. I’m sorry but that’s funny. I wouldn’t know how to make the visitor counter tilt in a generous direction if I tried, however, Tea People are good at exaggerating numbers. You’ve included Facebook! That’s rich! Now, you’re saying, “well, he’s got more people than Sharpton.” I wouldn’t go to see Al Sharpton speak if he paid me. Next, you’ll be saying Beck had more people than I have subscribers. No kidding. What’s your point, or don’t you have one?

                By the way, I’m quite proud of the visitors that come here. Some really great people come here from both sides of the political spectrum. A few them are far better than I am at debating. This number is unique visitors and I must say, I’m honored. You didn’t insult me. Next are you going to say my mother wears army boots?

                • Andrea Griffin

                  @Anomaly100, Although people watching on internet streams don’t count at all for real live attendance, it does count for a gauge of general interest.

                  Explain to me why it matters how many people were there? Are you scared of the growing numbers? Are you afraid of us? Why?

                  • Shiva

                    @Creature,

                    Im not afraid of you. I feel sorry for you.

                  • Modo

                    @Creature, I second that…I feel sorry for you!!

                • Hank

                  @Anomaly100, Doesn’t she?? ;-) I’m not sure the “Subscribers” number means anything. I visit and participate on several blogs routinely but subscribe to none.

                  I have found this blog to be fair in allowing comments from all perspectives as opposed to SOME blogs that absolutely DO NOT allow opposing thought and will censor and ban you just for disagreeing with the moderator. And while he may have more “subscribers”, he has no integrity. And he has the respect of no one save a handful of sycophants.

                  I will say this though Stevoni-who-ever-you-are, you seem a particularly nasty person. I’m not sure berating someone trying to approach the political turmoil we face these days in an affirmative manner serves any real purpose.

                    @ Modo
                    @ Shiva
                    Thanks for thinking of me! You should have your other 8 subscribers feel sorry for me too!

          • Andrea Griffin

            @Stevoni, Number of page views has nothing to do with number of subscribers. Whenever a page is loaded with that counter on it, the counter goes up. You’ll notice that the counter is in the header of the page, which means loading any entry on the blog will increment the counter. I really hope you’re not thinking the counter means this particular post has that many views – that isn’t how those counters work.

          when? where? I know what your referring to and not only are you wrong, you’ve accused the wrong person of the offense. It was AL “My Pal” Sharpton who said MLK was a Socialist. MLK would be run out of the Democratic Party today.

          • Modo

            What planet are you living on?

            • Creature

              Earth, and I was wrong. It wasn’t Al Sharpton, my bad. It was Julian Bond of the NAACP.

    All of the below are direct quotes from Twitter. And I compiled them in about a minute. Your comment here is a classic example of the pot calling the kettle black.

    (And you know I could probably give you a thousand or more quotes as quick as I could copy and paste.)

    It would be interesting to find an English translation of Hitler’s speeches, then compare them to the rantings of Rush, Beck, & some others.

    Fascism is alive in America.

    Beckerwood’s followers love him for the color of his skin.

    Wouldn’t BeckyPooh look so good in jack boots and a nice black uniform. Goes so well with white & blond.

    Was Beck channeling Hitler today?

    Apparently it’s right wing freak protesters day.

    America had it’s first rally to honor uneducated, ignorant and hateful. Not as good as Nazi model, but keep working.

    When fascism comes to the US, it will be hyped as patriotic by Fox News & hate radio.

  • Shiva

    @Hank,

    The last one is correct

  • Jehosephat

    @Hank,

    I love it when people name call. It sure says a lot about who they are.

    Keep it up, then I can be 100% sure that I don’t want to move forward with people like you.

    Thanks again.

  • Hank

    @Shiva, I’ll accept that, as long as you will accept the msm has already done so with the Obama Presidency! ;-)

  • Shiva

    @Hank,

    The main stream press has hyped Obamas fascism as patriotic?

  • Hank

    @Jehosephat, Huh?? Read closer. Those are quotes from people on Twitter. LIBERAL people at that. I try not to call people names although sometimes, it’s very hard to resist.
