“International Burn a Koran Day” was denounced today by General David Petraeus and protesters who burned an effigy of Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center. This type of radical behavior by Jones hasn’t worked in the past by others.
In Abu Garib, guards introduced the Quran to the toilet after shredding it. Many right wing bloggers dismissed this casually, even while knowing this damaged our country. It was justified and/or minimized, meanwhile the good of our nation was at stake.

It doesn’t bother me that we made inmates at Gitmo uncomfortable. And unhappy. And that we messed with their minds. And jerked them around a little culturally – after all, at the base of it all – there is a strong element of culture war here, whether we formally admit it or not. And I find the left’s sympathy with poor detainees at Gitmo having a Koran mishandled or damaged, evoking outrage, when they pooh-pooh the Bible, mock christian believers, support aritists immersing crucifixes in urine, etc, as simply expressions of art.
General Patraeus has spoken out against this protest of the Muslim faith, deeming it to be a danger to our troops.
Burning the Quran would be akin to Muslims burning the Bible en masse while celebrating it. It’s noted that radical Muslims from the Taliban have treated our faith in America with great disdain, but aren’t we better than that? Or maybe not.
The anniversary of 9/11 is almost upon us and Muslim hate crimes are peaking, but if that’s not enough of a sign, then listen to the General:
“It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort,” Petraeus told the Wall Street Journal. “It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community.”Petraeus’ comments come in the wake of anti-American protests in Kabul.
Earlier today, 500 demonstrators, including members of parliament and Muslim clerics, gathered outside the U.S. embassy to condemn the “International Burn A Koran Day” planned by the Dove World Outreach Center, a small church in Florida.
Protesters burned the church’s pastor, Terry Jones, in effigy and called for “Death to America.”A similar protest, reportedly attracting thousands of Muslims, was held this weekend in Jakarta, Indonesia.Petraeus said the Koran-burning, planned for Sept. 11, could give the Taliban the kind of anti-American propaganda they can exploit to turn fellow Afghans against the U.S. military.
Jones, the pastor of the Dove Outreach center has promised to continue with his plan to burn the Quran, giving no thought to the public’s protests and leaders who have denounced this behavior.
If this is in the name of Christianity, then there is no reason to continue. This will not bring Islam to Christ, but it will piss a lot of Muslims off, mostly the extremists. Park 51, the recreation and prayer center, also known by the right as the Ground Zero Mosque, wanted to build bridges and keep the peace so to speak. To tear these bridges down which aren’t even built yet while amping up the hatred toward other faiths, will result in death to our soldiers. That’s not very pro America.
Perverting the good name of peaceful Muslims and lumping them in with extremists will result in the same for us. Are we to conclude that violence is what radical Christians want? How far do they want this to go.
How then are we better than them? Cite the verse in the Bible where Jesus applauded such behavior for me. I’m all ears.
