The highly unfavorable Governor of Florida, Rick Scott, whose self interests outweigh his constituents recently got owned and now it’s happened once more. Scott initiated a new drug test for the welfare program where the recipient of benefits would have to go through a drug test before getting aid. The results came in on the first batch of tests which contrast starkly to his assumption that welfare recipients are drug addicts.
And now, preliminary figures on the new Florida law show that they are less likely than other people to use drugs — not more. The law was enacted as a cost saving measure, but it’s costly.
‘Fiscal Conservatives’ are forging ahead with this measure despite it being a waste of taxpayer dollars. Instead of learning from her Conservative counterpart’s mistakes, Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) said she wants to institute drug testing for people who apply for state unemployment benefits — obviously under the impression that if a person is not working, they’re abusing drugs. This whole line of thinking gives into the false premise of unemployed Americans being lazy and a burden.
A better idea which won’t cost taxpayers a dime, and it makes far more sense considering the politicians in question, appear more inebriated than their constituents comes from a famous Floridian.
Chicago Sun Times reports:
Columnist and best-selling author Carl Hiaasen offered to pay for drug testing for all 160 members of the Florida Legislature in what he called “a patriotic whiz-fest.” Several of the law’s supporters say they’re on board.
“There is a certain public interest in going after hypocrisy,” Hiaasen said Tuesday, two days after he made his proposal in a Miami Herald column.
“Folks that are applying for DCF (Department of Children and Families) money normally wouldn’t be standing in that line, and on top of that humiliation they now get to pee in a cup so they can get grocery money for their kids,” Hiaasen told the Associated Press in an interview.
The failed law as well as the failed Governor, certainly should be put out to pasture. Any politician forging ahead with this dubious and costly testing, must be on drugs. Since only 2% of welfare recipients failed the test – most likely as much or more of the crazed politicians in Florida would also fail it.
And, it won’t cost the taxpayers one dime. We could all chip in and have them tested weekly.
